Mangrove CSR Project Preserves Ecosystem and Empowers Local Community
In an inspiring display of environmental stewardship and community empowerment, GAC Sri Lanka has successfully launched a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project focused on the conservation and restoration of mangrove ecosystems at Matara Kiralakele sanctuary. The initiative not only highlights the company's commitment to sustainability but also demonstrates its dedication to uplifting local communities in Matara District, Sri Lanka
The project, which commenced recently, aims to address the critical decline of mangrove forests and its impact on the ecosystem. Mangroves, often referred to as the "rainforests of the sea," play a vital role in preserving coastal biodiversity, mitigating climate change by sequestering carbon, and acting as natural buffers against storm surges and coastal erosion.

With a multi-pronged approach, GAC Sri Lanka partnered with local environmental organizations, government agencies, and community groups to ensure the success of the project. The collaboration allows for the pooling of resources, knowledge, and expertise to implement sustainable conservation measures.

Firstly, a comprehensive assessment of the local mangrove areas was done to identify regions in urgent need of restoration. After rigorous research and ecological studies, GAC Sri Lanka, and its partners developed a strategic plan to combat the ecological degradation and promote the long-term health of the mangrove forests. The restoration process will include planting thousands of mangrove seedlings in Matara, Kiralakele sanctuary.

The Kiralakele Sanctuary, administered by the Department of wildlife and conservation, stands as the sole sanctuary in Matara District dedicated to the preservation of its wetlands, which are closely associated with mangroves. Situated in proximity to Matara town, this sanctuary plays a crucial role in conserving the ecosystem and safeguarding the township against floods caused by the impacts on the Nilwala River. These wetlands serve as natural reservoirs, helping to maintain optimal water quality and offer valuable environmental services. They also possess the capacity to act as buffers against water-related issues while providing significant biodiversity value.

The Kiralakale Wetlands is also a habitats for a diverse range of species, including amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, all of which have uniquely adapted to thrive in aquatic environments. These wetlands also hold particular importance for numerous migratory bird species in the area, making them an essential lifeline during their seasonal movements.

The main objective of the Kiralakele Sanctuary's program is to establish a sustainable conservation effort that aligns with the overarching goal of GAC, Sri Lanka to become a carbon-neutral company by 2050. Recognizing the significance of mangrove ecosystems in carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation, GAC Sri Lanka has initiated this program to actively contribute to their preservation while working towards their long-term sustainability targets.

Through this transformative CSR project, GAC Sri Lanka sets an exemplary standard for corporate entities in their commitment to environmental conservation and community well-being. By prioritizing sustainable initiatives and engaging stakeholders, the company showcases the power of business to drive positive change and create a better future for all.

As the project continues to grow and evolve, GAC Sri Lanka remains dedicated to monitoring and evaluating its impact, ensuring that the preservation and restoration of mangrove ecosystems become a sustainable endeavor, benefiting both nature and society.
