GAC Sri Lanka together with McLarens Group and MAS Foundation Installs Innovative Ocean Strainer on Path to Blue Flag Certification for Unawatuna Beach
In an ambitious stride towards preserving the natural beauty of Unawatuna Beach, a collaborative initiative led by McLarens Group and GAC Sri Lanka, in partnership with MAS Foundation, is set to make waves. This endeavor is driven by a shared commitment to address United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 - Life Below Water, and it brings a beacon of hope for a pristine, sustainable future.
Unawatuna Beach is renowned as a sought-after tourist destination, attracting visitors from far and wide who seek to bask in its splendor. To ensure that this natural wonder remains unspoiled, a significant effort has been made to safeguard its pristine waters. The Southern Province Tourism Bureau has been instrumental in this conservation mission, aligning its vision with international standards by aiming to recognize Unawatuna Beach as a certified Blue Flag beach.

The Blue Flag is an internationally acclaimed eco-label, a symbol of environmental excellence, and a testament to a beach or marina's commitment to upholding rigorous standards in water quality, safety, and environmental sustainability. This esteemed recognition signifies responsible tourism and environmental stewardship, resonating with communities and travelers who prioritize eco-friendly destinations.

As a step towards this prestigious recognition, a 3.5-meter-long ocean strainer has been recently installed at a canal linked to Unawatuna Beach. This innovative step forward was made possible through the collaborative efforts involving local authorities, the Southern Province Tourism Bureau, and the unwavering community support.

Estimates from the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) suggest that the ocean strainer will collect approximately 150 kilograms of non-biodegradable plastic monthly. Beyond its mechanical function, the device serves as a symbolic testament to Unawatuna's commitment to preserving its pristine coastline from the menace of plastic pollution.

The ocean strainer plays a pivotal role in meeting one of the critical certification criteria for the Blue Flag - the prevention of plastic leakage from inland waterways into the ocean. With this innovative solution in place, Unawatuna Beach is one step closer to becoming a certified Blue Flag beach, setting a new standard for sustainable tourism practices in the region.

This initiative has garnered unwavering support from local businesses, environmental organizations, and the community at large. It demonstrates what can be achieved when a community unites to safeguard its natural treasures. The preservation of Unawatuna Beach is not just a local mission; it signifies a global declaration urging everyone to adopt greater responsibility and environmental consciousness in their travel choices.

As we celebrate this momentous achievement, we look forward to Unawatuna Beach claiming its spot on the world map of eco-friendly destinations, where natural beauty and sustainability coexist. Unawatuna Beach is not just a paradise for tourists; it's a sanctuary for the environment, and our commitment is unwavering in maintaining it as such.
