Hotel Topaz Kandy, in commemoration of World Tourism Day, in collaboration with the Department of Trade, Commerce and Tourism hosted The Topaz Tourmaline Culinary Talents 2017 competition for the second consecutive year as their key CSR event. This was held at the Topaz/ Tourmaline Complex on September 30th 2017 where students from 30 different schools in and around Kandy took part. These young master chefs competed in various categories showcasing their mastery of different aspects in the culinary arts field. Their skills were judged by executive chefs from some of the top hotels in the Kandy region.
Hotel Topaz mentored these young budding chefs to perform exceptionally well at the competition by hosting a training seminar for students from all 30 schools, to further develop their culinary skills and remind them about the basic techniques and skills required when preparing meals.
Furthermore, in preparation for the Culinary Talents Competition this year, an official press conference was held at The Tourmaline, Kandy on the 20th of September, which was graced by the Honorable Chief Minister, Sarath Ekanayake.
The competition comprised of 5 different categories each school had to compete in, namely fruit & vegetable carving, mocktail preparation, cake decoration, salad making and Eastern cuisine. Each category had an allocated time limit and the final presentations were judged. After a long day of getting the right mix, carefully carving the right angles, tasting every dish and pouring every last drop of creativity into the competition, Sri Sumangala College finished in 3rd place, Dharmaraja College, Kandy came in 2nd place and Pushpadana Girls’ College, Kandy emerged victorious for the second consecutive year.
